Basada en una novela homónima de Thomas Hardy, publicada anónimamente en 1872,la atractiva y educada joven Fancy Day (Keeley Hawes) llega al pueblo como maestra de escuela y para cuidar a su debilitado padre. Pronto tiene tres pretendientes que compiten por ella: el adinerado Mr. Shiner, el jornalero pobre Dick Dewy y el párroco Mr. Maybold. Con quién se casará Fancy pasa a ser el tema central de los chismes del pueblo. Además se ve envuelta en la disputa entre el párroco y el antiguo coro de la iglesia cuando el clérigo le pide que toque el armonio en la parroquia.
